From Cigar Afficionado
Like many Montecristos in the Altadis portfolio, the upcoming Montecristo M is made in Nicaragua by A.J. Fernandez. The binder and filler are Nicaraguan, but the focus here is the wrapper, a leaf of Ecuadoran tobacco grown from Connecticut seeds that Altadis says was aged for 20 years. It was procured from David Perez, fifth-generation tobacco grower and owner of A.S.P. Enterprises.
Review:
Trying this cigar for the first time i was expecting it to have a kick and such a great and bold flavor being that it is a connecticut wrapper. But it is definitely not your typical connecticut cigar. This cigar has the signature of David Perez from A.S.P. that certifys that the wrapper is 20 years aged. Most cigars if you can tell the difference between smoking straight from the store than smoking it 2 to 5 years later from just having it sit in your humidor. But this cigar doesn’t need that extra aging, A.S.P. already aged for so long and it is amazing smoking a connecticut wrapper with that much age on it. This limited edition is a must grab before they are all gone. A lot of times a limited edition cigar gets brought out again but for this one being that the wrapper has 20 years of age the exclusivity of it is high.
The cold draw had creamy sweet notes of cedar.
The first third started off with great flavors of natural tobacco goodness, backed up with a tangy cedar note and a touch of hay on the palate. The smoke was medium bodied in these early stages.
In the second third, the Montecristo M was mostly mellow and smooth, with a very pleasing natural tobacco taste, accentuated by notes of cedar and black pepper.
The final third becomes bolder with a richer and darker flavors of nuts and oak. These darker notes created a well rounded flavor for a great finish that doesn’t leave a harsh after taste.
Overall had a delightful experience with this limited edition Montecristo M, it’s not every day you can smoke a cigar with this much age. For smokers that aren’t the type to pick up and smoke a Connecticut wrapper cigar and prefer the bolder maduro cigars. I would give this Montecristo a chance especially in the morning with your morning coffee.
